| Background: |
IL-4 is a multifunctional cytokine that prompts naive helper T cells to evolve into Th2 cells. It is synthesized by various cells, including mast cells, T cells, and bone marrow stromal cells. IL-4 plays several roles, such as encouraging the growth of B-cells and T-cells and steering CD4+ T-cells to become Th2 cells. It boosts the secretion and presence of IgE and IgG1 on the cell surface and modulates the expression of the low affinity Fc receptor for IgE on lymphocytes and monocytes. Rat IL-4 has approximately 40-45% amino acid sequence similarity with its human, mouse, and rhesus macaque counterparts, with each species' IL-4 being unique in its activity. |
