Synonyms: | BMP-2A |
Background: | Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP-2), another member of the BMP group and the TGF-beta superfamily (BMP2-7), is implicated in the induction of cartilage and bone formation. Over thirteen BMPs have been discovered, with BMP-2 being expressed in various tissues such as the lung, spleen, brain, liver, prostate, ovary, and small intestine. BMP-2 is a potent cytokine that works in conjunction with osteoconductive carriers like collagen and synthetic hydroxyapatite to stimulate bone production. Recombinant human BMP-2 is used in orthopedics and dentistry. BMP-2 functions as a disulfide-linked homodimer with a molecular weight of approximately 26 kDa. The precursor of BMP-2 consists of 259 amino acids, including a signal sequence that is removed by a furin-type protease to produce the mature peptide. |
