Background: | Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a versatile cytokine with pivotal roles in host defense, acute phase reactions, immune responses, neuronal functions, and hematopoiesis. It is expressed by various normal and transformed cells, both lymphoid and non-lymphoid. IL-6 production is stimulated by diverse signals such as mitogens, antigens, lipopolysaccharides, calcium ionophores, cytokines, and viruses. However, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-13 exhibit inhibitory effects on IL-6 expression in monocytes. Elevated serum levels of IL-6 have been documented in numerous pathological conditions, encompassing bacterial and viral infections, trauma, autoimmune disorders, inflammation, and malignancies. The cDNA of rat IL-6 encodes a precursor polypeptide of 211 amino acid residues, featuring a hydrophobic signal peptide that undergoes cleavage to yield the mature protein comprising 187 amino acids. Notably, at the protein sequence level, there is approximately 39% identity between rat and human IL-6, while there exists an 87% identity between mouse and rat IL-6. |
