Background: |
The human interferon-beta 2 gene (IFNB2) yields a protein that shares identity with B-cell stimulation factor-2 (BSF-2), hybridoma growth factor (HGF) known as "interleukin-6" (IL-6), and hepatocyte stimulating factor (HSF). These proteins play pivotal roles in orchestrating the acute-phase response to tissue injury and in regulating the growth and differentiation of B and T cells. IL-6 has garnered attention as a potential contributor to osteoporosis due to its stimulatory effects on cells of the osteoclast lineage, suggesting involvement in bone loss linked to estrogen deficiency. With multifaceted functions in immune response regulation, hematopoiesis, and bone resorption, IL-6 extends its influence to hepatic acute phase response, adipose tissue metabolism, lipoprotein lipase activity, and hepatic triglyceride secretion. Excessive IL-6 production, a proinflammatory cytokine, correlates with various age-related conditions including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, periodontal disease, frailty, and functional decline. BSF-2, a newly recognized interleukin comprised of 184 amino acids, stands alongside IL-6. The standard product utilized in this kit is recombinant IL-6, comprising 188 amino acids with a molecular mass of 21.8 kDa. |
