Background: | Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a multifaceted alpha-helical cytokine crucial in acute phase reactions, inflammation, hematopoiesis, bone metabolism, and cancer progression. Its activity is pivotal in the shift from acute inflammation to either acquired immunity or chronic inflammatory diseases. IL-6 is produced by various cell types as a 22 kDa-28 kDa phosphorylated and variably glycosylated molecule. It triggers signaling via a cell surface heterodimeric receptor complex consisting of a ligand binding subunit (IL-6R) and a signal transducing subunit (gp130). IL-6 stands as a pivotal factor in plasma cell growth. |
