Background: | IL6 is a multifaceted cytokine pivotal in orchestrating host defense mechanisms through the modulation of immune and inflammatory responses. Generated by an array of cell types including T cells, monocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and keratinocytes, IL6 exhibits diverse biological roles. It fosters B-cell differentiation and enhances antibody production, collaborates with IL3 in megakaryocyte maturation and platelet formation, triggers the synthesis of acute-phase proteins in the liver, and governs bone metabolism. Signaling of IL6 is mediated via the IL6 receptor system, comprising two components: IL6R alpha and gp130. Notably, mouse-derived IL6 remains inert on human cells, whereas both human and mouse versions display equal potency on mouse cells. |
