Background: |
Interleukin-6 is a cytokine predominantly synthesized by activated monocytes, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells. Its diverse biological functions stem from its activation of a cell surface signaling complex involving IL6, IL6RA, and the shared signaling receptor gp130. This cytokine is pivotal in the terminal differentiation of B-cells into Ig-secreting cells, as well as in promoting the growth of myeloma and plasmacytoma, along with inducing differentiation in nerve cells. Moreover, IL-6 serves as a critical regulator of the acute phase reaction. |
