Background: | The categorization of mammalian cytokines possessing antiviral properties is extensively documented, primarily as Type I Interferon (IFNI) or Type II Interferon (IFNII). However, this classification doesn't directly apply to avian interferons, despite their initial discovery in chickens. Recent functional studies are revealing similarities between chicken interferon and mammalian IFNI, highlighting the conservation of cysteine residues and the presence of approximately ten closely related intron-less IFN alpha genes. Further investigation has demonstrated robust expression of chicken IFN-alpha genes following viral infection in monocyte-derived macrophages and embryo fibroblasts, with recombinant chicken IFN proving to be a potent antiviral agent. |
