Background: |
Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha), also referred to as IFN-a, IFNA, and Interferon-alpha, is classified as a type I interferon and comprises 13 subtypes: IFN-alpha 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 21. These subtypes are primarily synthesized by cells infected with viruses upon detection of danger signals like viral DNA or RNA. Upon binding to its receptor, IFN-alpha triggers an antiviral response, while also demonstrating anti-tumor effects. Plasmacytoid dendritic cells are notably significant producers of type I interferons. |
