Background: |
Interferon-alpha, also referred to as IFN-alpha, IFN-a, IFNA, is a type I interferon encompassing 13 subtypes: IFN-alpha 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 21. These subtypes are predominantly synthesized by virus-infected cells upon detection of danger signals like viral DNA or RNA. Upon binding to its receptor, IFN-alpha triggers an antiviral response, with demonstrated anti-tumor effects as well. Plasmacytoid dendritic cells are significant contributors to the production of type I interferons. |
