Background: TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a molecule that triggers apoptosis. It functions as a type II transmembrane protein and shares homology with other members of the tumor necrosis factor family. In humans, the gene responsible for TRAIL is situated on chromosome 3q26. TRAIL interacts with death receptors DR4 and DR5, initiating caspase-8-dependent apoptosis. While TRAIL predominantly induces apoptosis in transformed and tumor cells, it typically spares normal cells, despite being expressed at considerable levels in most normal tissues.
