| Background: | The human interferon-beta 2 gene (IFNB2) yields a protein identical to B-cell stimulation factor-2 (BSF-2), hybridoma growth factor (HGF) - also known as interleukin-6 (IL-6), and hepatocyte stimulating factor (HSF). Proteins originating from this gene orchestrate the plasma protein response to tissue injury, known as the acute-phase response, and oversee the growth and differentiation of both B and T cells. IL-6, in particular, has garnered attention as a potential factor in osteoporosis due to its ability to stimulate cells of the osteoclast lineage, potentially contributing to bone loss in estrogen-deficient individuals. IL-6 plays pivotal roles in immune response regulation, hematopoiesis, and bone resorption. It not only triggers the hepatic acute-phase response but also impacts adipose tissue metabolism, lipoprotein lipase activity, and hepatic triglyceride secretion. Excessive production of IL-6, a proinflammatory cytokine, correlates with various age-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, periodontal disease, frailty, and functional decline. BSF-2, a novel interleukin comprising 184 amino acids, shares structural similarities with IL-6. The standard product utilized in this kit is recombinant human IL-6, comprising 184 amino acids and exhibiting a molecular mass of 20.3 kDa. |
