Background: |
This gene encodes a cytokine that plays a role in inflammation and the maturation of B cells. Additionally, the encoded protein has been demonstrated to be an endogenous pyrogen, capable of inducing fever in autoimmune diseases or infections. The protein is primarily produced at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, where it is secreted into the serum through the IL-6 receptor alpha and induces a transcriptional inflammatory response. The function of this gene is implicated in various inflammation-related disease states. |
