Background: | Interleukin(IL)-18, also known as Interferon-gamma-inducing factor (IGIF), enhances the natural killer (NK) cell activity in spleen cells. Encoded by a gene yielding a precursor protein of 192 amino acids and a mature protein of 157 amino acids, IL-18 is a recently identified cytokine influencing both T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th2 responses. It serves as a potent proinflammatory cytokine with potential implications in atherogenesis. Elevated expression of IL-18 is observed in atherosclerotic plaques compared to healthy arterial tissues, predominantly localized within plaque macrophages. |
