Background: | Interferons (IFNs) are proteins synthesized and discharged by host cells upon encountering pathogens like viruses, bacteria, or parasites, as well as tumor cells. They facilitate intercellular communication, activating the immune system's protective mechanisms to eliminate pathogens or tumors. Among the IFN-beta proteins, fibroblasts produce significant amounts. These proteins exhibit antiviral activity primarily contributing to the innate immune response. Specifically, two variants of IFN-beta have been identified: IFN-beta1 (IFNB1) and IFN-beta3 (IFNB3). |
